Palatal Expander
Palatal expanders widen your upper jaw by putting light pressure on your molars. You will adjust the expander over time until your upper jaw is the desired width, and will then wear the expander for several months to retain the shape of your jaw.
Adjusting Your Palatal Expander
Step One
Tilt the patient’s head back in a well-lit area
Step Two
Place the key in the hole
Step Three
Push the key towards the back of the mouth. This will rotate the fender and a new hole will then appear. When the key meets the back of the palatal expander, rotation will stop.
Step Four
Press down towards the tongue to remove the key. The next key insertion hole should now be visible.
