Brushing & Flossing
Brushing and flossing are important for everyone, but particularly for those with braces. To keep your teeth and gums healthy through the duration of your treatment, you’ll need to brush and floss after every meal.
Brushing with Braces
After every meal, you’ll need to brush your teeth for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and either a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush or an electric toothbrush. Brush the front and back sides of your teeth in gentle circular motions, with the brush head at a 45-degree angle. Then, brush the chewing surface of your teeth with small, gentle back-and-forth motions.
Flossing with Braces
To floss between your braces, you’ll need special orthodontic floss or a floss threader. Thread the floss between your braces and wrap each end around your pointer fingers, leaving a few inches of floss in-between. Then, use a back-and-forth motion to floss between each of your teeth and remove debris. If you find that regular floss is not effective at removing plaque and food particles, you may want to consider using a water flosser. Contact us for more information on these flossers.
